Tips for a Perfect First Look on Your Wedding Day

As a bride, you are expected to make a lot of important decisions about your wedding day. It’s not always easy, especially when you’re wandering in unknown territory. We took into account our experience with photography and added a bit of science in the interest of helping you with at least one wedding day decision. The outcome? The perfect time to start snapping away on your big day. Want to do a first look? We’ll make sure the light is just right. Waiting to see your love at the end of the aisle? We’ve got that glow covered. So sit back, have a glass (or two) of wine and let us help you decided on when to get the party started.

First Looks:

We love these. It gives us quality time with just the bride and groom before the celebration begins. It’s such a sweet and important moment, we want to make sure we get the most authentic photos possible. To make sure that happens, we suggest you plan your ceremony to begin at sunset or later. It will allow for gorgeous natural light and give you optimal time for couples portraits. If a first look is something you know you want out of your wedding photos be sure to chat with us before the big day so we can help you plan out the big reveal.

While first looks are super fun, we fully support not seeing your love until you round the corner and begin your walk down the aisle. Talk about capturing that raw in the moment feeling! If this seems more like your speed, we suggest starting your ceremony two – two and a half hours before sunset. Whether you’re saying I do inside or out, it will allow for the best natural light to frame your photos. Let us know if this is something important to you so we can do some coordination and avoid you and your groom crossing paths.

Regardless of first looks, or waiting to do photos until after the ceremony, our favorite light hits 30 to 45 minutes before the sunset. We suggest planning to have at least one important moment happen in that time frame. Keep in mind that seasons affect when the sun actually sets. We always suggest checking the scheduled sun set time of your wedding date here. We use this site constantly, it’s super helpful!

At the end of the day we want to make sure we’re giving you the best possible pictures of your wedding. If we can use nature to our advantage we absolutely will! We also think timing out your photos will create a schedule for your big day that will alleviate some day of jitters. Whatever you choose to do, we’ll be there to capture the memories made. If you have any other questions about creating beautiful photos, let’s chat! We can’t think of a better conversation than one that involves weddings and photography. Because if you haven’t noticed, it’s kind of our thing.
