Engagement Photos Part 3: What To Wear

Can I be really honest with you?????

To me, there is nothing better than when a couple goes all out in what they wear for their engagement session! This is your first moment to shine as an almost-married couple! Why not dress up?

In today’s post, part 3 of the engagement session series, I’m sharing style tips that will make your engagement photos heirlooms that you’ll treasure forever.

Engagement Session Style Tips for Her

Have you ever wanted to rock a sequined gown, tulle skirt, or grammy worthy gown, but never found the perfect occasion for these fun pieces?

Your engagement session is the PERFECT opportunity to get a little (or a lot!) fancy, so don’t be afraid to have some fun, ladies!

Most of my brides choose two outfits: one, “bring-the-wow” dress and then a shorter cocktail or flowy maxi for a more casual “out on a date” feel.

But here’s the deal: if you want two show-stopping dresses, do it! The camera loves runway-esque apparel and so do I!

And here’s a pro tip from someone who has shot hundreds of engagement sessions: If you don’t want to add a new, permanent piece to your wardrobe, consider renting!

Rent the Runway offers a TON of amazing, high-end pieces so you can look like (but not spend!) a million bucks. (Use that code to get $30 off your first order!)

Hair, Nails, and Makeup

If you can, opt for professional hair, nails, and makeup services; it looks amazing and removes the stress of getting ready on your own.

Good stylists and makeup artists know how to get your look just right for the camera–and my brides always love the final result.

Bonus: If you can plan it right, this is a great time to do your wedding makeup trial, a service that most makeup artists provide.

Engagement Session Style Tips for Him

From James Bond to Don Draper, men look most striking in a well-tailored suit.

If your fiancé doesn’t have one, now’s the perfect excuse to invest in something he’ll wear for the rest of his life. And you might be surprised to learn that suits are a lot less expensive than you might think!

Want to add some extra visual interest? Consider mixing a suit coat, blazer, or sport coat with a different pant color, which is often more fun than wearing two full suits in a row.

If that’s not your style, opt for one suit and a more casual look, such as a leather jacket or fun blazer and dark denim.

Accessories

Lastly, don’t forget the mancessories, which can really help show off your fiance’s personality!

Here are a few ideas:

Interesting tie or bowtie

Statement jacket

Patterned pocket square

Watch

Fun socks

Sunglasses

How to Coordinate Outfits

When coordinating your outfits, keep in mind that your looks will be the most cohesive on camera with the color palettes coordinate.

But don’t try to match!

Gray or navy suits are a strong complement to most women’s outfits, whereas patterns tend to distract the eye. Remember: classic never goes out of style!

Wrapping up!

Your engagement session is your time to shine, so don’t be afraid to dress up!

Most couples choose two outfits for their sessions.

If you can, hire professionals for hair, makeup, and nails.

Men look sharp in tailored suits. If your fiancé doesn’t have one, now is the perfect time to invest!

And don’t forget those “mancessories” to help add personality to your fiancé’s look.

Coordinate, don’t match, your outfits!
